Day 30

January 30, 2012

A day of mundane household chores...cleaning and laundry!

And to break up the boredom of cleaning chores, a trip to our local LTS ticket office to pick up our Salute to Heroes WDW tickets!

Day 29

January 29, 2012

I love aquariums.....today we visited the National Aquarium.

Day 28

January 28, 2012

Another beautiful day in sunny Northern Virginia....is it really January?  I was definitely not looking forward to winter after spending the past two years in California, so I'm glad that Mother Nature has taken pity on me and thought to ease me into East Coast weather.

That said, it was a day of relaxation, and waiting to pick Terry up at the airport after his weeklong trip to the West Coast.

And because we are busy planning our upcoming trip to Walt Disney World, there is no better way to get into the Disney spirit ahead of time than virtually via the Disneyland Xbox game!

Day 27

January 27, 2012

Today started early with a trip to deliver a belated birthday gift.  We had to drive through a downpour that you could barely see the highway, but the temperatures were nice, a warm 61 degrees..never giving away that it was the middle of winter.

On our return home the sky had cleared and the day became beautiful, it wouldn't take long until all remnants of the storm would disappear as if it had never occurred.  I'm so glad Mother Nature has decided to pretend it isn't January!

I had hoped to catch the sunset but didn't make it outside in time.

Day 26

January 26, 2012

Nothing exciting happened today...went and had the oil changed in the car, and played the Disneyland game on xbox.  I also surfed the web seeing what exciting news my friends had along with sharing a few links that contained information I thought would be helpful.

So, my picture for today is my personal plug for those I know (and even those I don't) to make sure you are going to:  http://msoy.milspouse.com and reading about these fabulous military spouses (of all branches) that have been nominated for the AFI 2012 Military Spouse of the Year.

Of course I have my favorite...I try and make sure that I vote as often as I can and really, if I'm sitting on the computer anyway, how hard is it to pop on over and click on a button to show my support for her?
So, for those on the fence of who to vote for...or if you just can't decide, vote for Jennifer Bassett!

Day 25

January 25, 2012

Another day playing tourist...the US Coast Guard Officer's Spouses Club of DC arranged a tour of the George Washington Masonic Temple in Alexandria, VA.  Of course, I had to take advantage, as I may not get the opportunity in the future.  I didn't realize that although the Masonic Temple is very close to the metro station, that it had so many stairs that needed scaled before reaching the front entry.  I wish I would have thought to take a picture of the stairs, but I can always go back for that.

These are a couple of views from the observation deck

The front lawn

Looking out toward Washington, DC (if you look closely in the distance you can see the Washington Memorial

a small part of Alexandria
Day 24

January 24, 2012

I have been on a mission for my husband of taking pictures with a President Obama bobble-head at the various monuments.  You would think I would get some odd looks as I set the bobble-head in various places and move to take a picture with the sights in the background.  Only once did someone whisper and point, but after they finished their own pictures of themselves, they in turn took a picture of the "President".

President O'Bobble at the World War II monument

at the Lincoln Memorial (this is also the picture the tourists took).

And because I love the Smithsonian's...here he is visiting the American History Museum

So, for those that always wonder if you get to see the President while visiting the Mall...as you can see, he does show up from time to time!

Day 23

January 23, 2012

Delayed start to the day, that was what I heard before I went to bed last night.  Here at Fort Belvoir, however, the day was normal ops.  I had a meeting to go to, but because DC was delayed my meeting was to be rescheduled.  Because of temperatures, they were worried about slippery roads (of which on the Virginia side I didn't notice any), so instead my daughter and I went shopping.

But, my daughter is always cold, so she needed to use these "hotties" to warm up a bit.  LOL

Day 22

January 22, 2012

Today was the day I decided the house needed cleaned...so the kitchen was taken care of, laundry was started and the front room was picked up.  As a reward (we all know we need rewards), a movie was what we wanted.  Looking at the movie listings we decided to go and see Sherlock Holmes (I love the movies up until now, and was anxious to see the new one) and we were not disappointed!

Of course with every movie, you must get the pre-requisite soda, popcorn and candy!

That evening we (or should I say I) visited one of my favorite places...

Ok, so I had to visit it virtually, but I did enjoy the visit.

Day 21

January 21, 2012

Today was one of those days that the weather deemed it a "stay inside" type of day.  With freezing temperatures (and freezing rain), Katy and I decided it was a good time to start on the box of coupon inserts that we needed to cut and sort to send overseas.  We haven't even made a dent in the stash we were entrusted with, but at least we have started!
This box contains the ones we have cut out.

The box and the stack on the footstool isn't all the inserts we still need to go through, there is another grocery bag full of inserts to cut coupons from (we have to check dates as some expired more than 6 months ago)!  After we get them cut out, we will then need to sort according to what they are for.

Day 20

January 20, 2012

Tonight I was reunited with many of my friends from the Juneau days, doing something we loved to do when we were all stationed there...BUNCO!

I canot wait until next month to meet up again for another fun evening with these ladies.

Day 19

January 19, 2012

When I get tired of the computer or need a break, I find other things to occupy my time.  Just before Christmas I bought a few puzzles.  I love putting together a puzzle...finding the pieces that go in just that right spot.  Yesterday I started this one; its not finished, but it gives a much needed break when I need it.

Day 18

January 18, 2012

I'm a day behind...yesterday I stayed off the computer in the evening (when I do the blog posts), and as such forgot to get on and post my picture.

This is what I did on the 18th, and my picture for that day

I'm often asked if I saw the President when I ventured down to the Mall...like he just walks around all the time.  So Katy and I spent a very cold windy day taking pictures of a couple of places with President Obama for our friends to enjoy.  Next week, we plan on returning to the Mall and getting a few more pictures with the President at some other spots around the Mall.

Day 17

January 17, 2012

Today's photo is of great importance...it will decide my future!  Depending on how it is received will determine if I return to school in the fall.

This envelope contains my application to the Dental Hygiene program here at the local college.  I wonder how long they will take before letting people know if they are in?

And because my photo blog is not always about just one photo, but instead about the highlights of my day (or something I deem important that I want to remember), I am including a second picture.  This one is an instrument of torture that many women have had the misfortune to endure (and if they haven't yet, they will).  Today I had to endure this torture, and because it isn't always done quickly, I was forced to suffer through the many angles it is designed to inflict its torture.

Monday, January 16, 2012

Day 16

January 16, 2012

Today we played tourist...but what picture to include?

I know everyone raves about the Smithsonian Museums (and I enjoy them as much as the next), but don't forget to go and check out Ford's Theater.

I didn't realize that it was more than just a working theater...that it is also a museum.

The museum also includes things from Lincoln's presidency and the Civil War, along with information on John Wilkes Booth and his co-conspirators.

The theater was so much more than we expected, and I am glad we decided to brave the cold (and wind) to take a walk and venture in to see what was inside.

Day 15

January 15, 2012

Today was a busy day and one I had to contemplate what picture I would include.  I considered taking a picture of the care packages that were donated by Northern Virginia Blue Star Moms, a group I recently joined, that will be sent to my son who is currently deployed.  I was set that this was what I was going to represent my day by.  But then I made bread...

Making this bread brought back memories of a tour we spent in Kodiak, AK.  A very good friend of mine was always making bread (and is who turned me on to getting a bread machine).  While our husbands were underway, I would stop by to visit with her and allow our kids to play and she always had bread baking so were would share a nice hot slice with butter and jam.

I miss those days for the companionship and friendship, for having her just down the street so that I could stop by, chat and pass the time.

Day 14

January 14, 2012

Today was a beautiful day outside, a bit cold but the sun was out.  But today's picture has nothing to do with the weather or the day instead it is about a group of people that meet once a month to enjoy each other's company!

Day 13
January 13, 2012

Today I spent the day in D.C. at the Hiring our Heroes - Military Spouse Career Forum.  There were over 1000 military spouses looking for jobs, taking advantage of the resume building workshop, getting face time with various organizations and on the spot job interviews.

And although I wasn't looking for a job, I did walk around, talking to the various organizations that advocate for our military spouses and veterans, adding some to my list of contacts.

Day 12
January 12, 2012

I may be posting this a day late, but the picture was taken on day 12 for the intention of it being the picture of the day.

Yesterday Katy and I had an adventure...she wanted to go and get the above books, so we decided to find a different Barnes & Noble than we usually use.  Sometimes GPS does not get you to where you want to go!  We enjoy these kind of adventures; however because we get to discover new areas around where we live.

Day 11
January 11, 2012

Today was a busy meeting type of day; however, finally I was able to sit down and check out one of my favorite places on the internet!

Tuesday, January 10, 2012

Day 10
January 10, 2012

Today I took a drive...to support a fellow Coast Guard Spouse on her new endeavor.  She opened the Courthouse Coffee and Creamery Shop in Powhatan, VA today!  I wanted to make sure that she knew that we military spouses support each other even if it means driving 2 1/2 hours for a cup of hot chocolate.

She has a wonderful wall painted with Chalkboard paint where her customers can leave messages.  So of course we decided we needed our own little piece of the wall so all our fellow Coastie Chicks that stop by can leave their name that they were there.  I wonder how many CC's will want to drive and leave their name on the wall?

Congratulations on your new business Jennifer!  And I hope you are in the black soon so you can save that first dollar profit!

Monday, January 9, 2012

Day 9
January 9, 2012

I had planned on just posting the picture of the MLK memorial which Katy and I checked out today, but instead I'm also including a picture of our weather today.

Yes, that is snow on the ground...the first to stick this winter.  But this will be gone before morning (if it isn't already gone), and I can't say I'll be sad to see it go.  I liked looking at it as it was falling, but I'm still not looking forward to it eventually staying.  Can we just call it good and move on to spring?

Sunday, January 8, 2012

Day 8
January 8, 2012

Today we went to the movies...

I went not because it was a movie I wanted to see but because Terry wanted to see it.  I need to remember that sometimes movies that I think I won't like, end up being a movie I love watching!

Saturday, January 7, 2012

Day 7
January 7, 2012

What do you do on a beautiful day in the Washington, DC area?  Go to the Mall of course!

And because we have never been, we stopped at the Library of Congress.

Friday, January 6, 2012

Day 6
January 6, 2012

There is nothing like restarting a good book.  With the Harry Potter movies finished, it was decided that rereading the series was in order.
Day 5
January 6, 2012

I meant to take the picture while half way through, but was so intent on finishing it I didn't think to snap the picture until I was finished.  I wanted to make some witty comparison of how our life is like a puzzle that each day we add to, but I cannot think of anything witty to say.

Here is where my evening went last night, a puzzle of Times Square.  It was a Christmas gift from my husband because he knows that before we leave the east coast I plan on spending New Year's Eve in Times Square.

Wednesday, January 4, 2012

Day 4
January 4, 2012

As many often do, I am trying to watch portion sizes in an effort to lose a few pounds.  I refuse to have a New Year's resolution, but I am going to attempt to at least try to watch what I consume.  I figure smaller portions should equal less weight added.

Tonight for dinner we made Beef and Broccoli...I used a bowl to help make it look like I had more than I could want, and used a spoon that has portion sizes on it to serve up what I should eat.  One scoop of starch, two scoops of vegetables!

Tuesday, January 3, 2012

Day 3
January 3rd, 2012

It was cold out today...cold enough that we had a little bit of a snow flurry.  I quickly rushed out to snap a picture, but unfortunately you cannot tell there was any snow in the air, and by the looks of the picture, the sun was shining and the sky was almost clear!  I'm not complaining, I don't care if we don't get any snow, or all we get is just "snow flurries" that appear but never land.

Monday, January 2, 2012

Day 2, January 2, 2012

Whoo Hoo, I'm on a roll...pictures taken two days in a row (don't give me a hard time, I'm a procrastinator  and given the chance I would forget to do this).

Today's picture was taken after finishing my big chore of the day...taking down the Christmas decorations  and returning the house back to normal.  So there you have it, my room is Christmas decoration free and everything is back in its rightful place!

Sunday, January 1, 2012

January 1, 2012

I've watched and viewed those I know post pictures each day this past year, and thought "What a wonderful way to chronicle one's life events".  I imagine that today, there are those that are going through their pictures from 2011 and remarking on the small things that they missed while going about the business of every day life that is so obvious when viewed through the snapshots taken each day.

This year I am resolved to follow in their footsteps...we all know how terrible I am at keeping up a blog, but I am hopeful that I can remember to take at least one picture a day, and post them if not weekly, then more often then monthly!

So today is a "do nothing" type of day, cleaning out my inbox, finishing up some laundry, watching TV and as usual sitting with my computer near.  It seems fitting that to begin my photo project it should begin as simply...with a picture of me sitting in my chair (and although you cannot see it, my computer is on my lap).

For those that decide to follow me on my journey through 2012, I hope you enjoy the pictures and if I seem to be slacking, give me a swift kick to get me back on track!
